Fish - Giinbaligal (scaly tribe) sign located on Walgett walking track

This interpretive sign has been been produced about the fish - both native and introduced - that are found still in Walgett's waterways. Fishing is a very important pasttime for Walgett's Aboriginal community, but "often makes us sad as the experience is very different today compared to in our youth". In the video below, Bill Simpson speaks about fishing at Walgett.

There is much work to be done to protect and repair the health of Walgett waterways and the creatures which live in them, as this sign explains. It is the hope of the Dharriwaa Elders Group that the information presented here will show the importance to our community of the Giinbaligal and ways that people can assist their survival in the future.
